What We Do
The Section of Plastic Surgery is part of the Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba.
The section is currently composed of 15 board certified plastic surgeons. Eight plastic surgeons are part of the academic GFT group at the University of Manitoba. Seven plastic surgeons are in community practice but are fully engaged in the teaching program.
The section provides all plastic surgical care to the province of Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and a significant portion of Nunavut. Microvascular reconstruction, breast reconstruction, major burn treatment and hand surgery are provided by plastic surgeons in the province. The section also provides significant care in craniofacial surgery, upper extremity and lower extremity reconstruction, skin cancers, complex wound reconstruction and aesthetic surgery.
The residency program in the Section of Plastic Surgery has a total of 10 residents. All residents complete the training program with most accepting further acclaimed academic fellowship positions throughout North America. There is currently one fellow in Breast and Microvascular Reconstruction.
The program is also proud to have 4 Physician Assistants within the program and a significant number of dedicated nursing staff integrated in the clinic and minor procedural areas. The nurses and physician assistants significantly improve patient care, resident education and research within the section. The section accepts numerous level medical students, physician assistant students and residents from other specialties for training in plastic surgery. The section also has numerous visitors annually from Canada and abroad, who come to observe the surgery delivered by section members.
The members of the section are actively involved and have leadership roles in national and international professional societies including the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Canadian Society for Surgery of the Hand, Group for the Advancement of Microsurgery (Canada), American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery.
