Dr. Thomas Hayakawa, BSc MD FRCSC

Dr. Tom Hayakawa is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Manitoba, Health Sciences Center in Canada. He is a member of the full time Academic faculty at the University of Manitoba Plastic Surgery Residency training program.

Dr. Hayakawa received his medical degree and completed his residency training at the University of Manitoba.   He completed both Microsurgery and Hand Surgery fellowships at the Harry Buncke Microsurgical Institute in San Francisco, California, and is a member of the esteemed Harry J. Buncke Society.   He also completed a facial aesthetic fellowship at the Plastic Surgery Institute of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr Hayakawa sub-specializes in oncologic and traumatic microsurgical reconstruction.  This includes microsurgical reconstruction of the breast, head and neck, extremities. Dr Hayakawa is an active member and participant in the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS), The Group Association of Microsurgery (GAM), and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM).  He is frequently invited to speak on expert panels and provide instructional courses.  He has also been a board examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for over 10 years.

Dr. Hayakawa has accumulated over 100 peer reviewed articles, presentations, and invited lectureships. He has also contributed to several textbook chapters on the topic of microsurgery. He has been part of the invited faculty at the Duke University Flap anatomic dissection course. His research interests lie in functional reconstruction of the extremities in complex oncology and trauma cases, as well as both microsurgical and implant based breast reconstruction.
